What Our Concert Is:

Members of the Bard College Conservatory of Music Graduate Vocal Arts Program, the VAP, will present a self-curated concert of contemporary American music exploring the ever changing and complicated role of family in the 21st century. Donations to support the Kids in Need of Defense Fund (KIND) can be made at the door or online by visiting supportkind.org.

Vocalists Jonathon Comfort, SarahAnn Duffy, Addie Rose Forstman, and Sun-Ly Pierce, joined by pianist Sophia Zhou, will present a concert aiming to deepen and broaden the understanding of what family means in the present day. Through the incorporation of song, spoken word, and personal experiences of family relationships they hope to offer the audience a new curiosity regarding their own definition and preconceived idea of family. The recital is an all-american program, consisting of American compositions post 1950. The music will range from the avant-garde compositions of George Rochberg, to the cinematic music of Guggenheim Fellowship award winner Jake Heggie, and will feature selections from renowned and well-loved theater composer Stephen Sondheim. This program has been brought to fruition under the mentorship of five time Grammy-winner and MacArthur Fellow award winner, Dawn Upshaw, artistic director of the VAP.

We hope to inspire curiosity, and encourage their audience to ask themselves "what does family mean to me?”

Why KIND? Why Helsinki Hudson?

By partnering with KIND we are bringing awareness to, and supporting, an organization that represents immigrant children without the means to obtain legal assistance when put at risk. KIND becomes the family support for many of these children who have either been taken away from, or do not have a family with them.

Club Helsinki prides itself on their ever changing seasonal and locally sourced menu. They strive to create a menu of creative homespun seasonally selected food in a welcoming and beautiful atmosphere. Chef Horner’s menus reflect food from his youth - tastes learned from his grandmother, where outdoor cooking, Pig Pickings, Shrimp Boils and Oyster Roasts were the norms of the day. He recreates his memories of family night after night with his food at Helsinki, not only creating a community within the Hudson area but within his team.

Our Mission:

Our goal is to produce a multifaceted exploration of what family is in the 21st century. Through the use of song, spoken word, and our own experience of familial relationships we will examine the different facets of motherhood, parent-child relationships or lack there of, and non-traditional family structures. By assaying these different components of family we will celebrate those things which have molded who we are present day. Secondarily, we want the audience to question their own predetermined notions of family after being exposed to the manifestation of our own experiences.
